Akkermansia Muciniphila Supplement: What One Pilot Trial Tested

Quick answer

An Akkermansia muciniphila supplement contains a gut bacterium first studied in people in one small pilot trial. That trial used 10 billion bacteria a day for three months and looked at metabolic markers, not digestion. Finessa prints 2 mg of strain AH39, which the trial did not test.

The bacterium01

What is an Akkermansia muciniphila supplement?

It is a capsule or powder that supplies Akkermansia muciniphila, a bacterium that lives in the human gut.

Finessa lists "Probiotic Powder (Akkermansia muciniphila AH39)" as its own line, 2 mg a scoop. It sits apart from the 52.5 mg Probiotic Blend. The panel prints no cell count for it.

The pilot02

What did the Akkermansia pilot trial find?

It found the bacteria were safe and well tolerated in a small group, with some metabolic changes.

The trial enrolled 40 overweight or obese, insulin-resistant volunteers; 32 finished. They took 10 billion bacteria a day for three months. Pasteurized bacteria improved insulin sensitivity compared with placebo. The authors called it a proof-of-concept pilot (Depommier 2019, Akkermansia pilot trial (Nature Medicine)).

The gap03

Does 2 mg of Akkermansia match the trial dose?

We cannot tell. Weight in milligrams says nothing about how many live cells a product holds (NIH ODS, Probiotics fact sheet (CFU, label)).

The ODS notes that labels only have to list the weight of the microbes, a figure with no relationship to viable cells. The tub front says 3 Billion CFU and the panel says 5 Billion CFU at manufacture, so even the blend count is unsettled. Ask the seller for a certificate of analysis.

Blue bars: the most one scoop can hold of that ingredient, from the label-order arithmetic. Gold bars: daily amounts used in research. The label hides single amounts inside each blend, so the scoop figures are ceilings, not measured amounts. This is our arithmetic, not a lab test. Research amounts are for the whole herb or standardized extract named, and may differ from the form in the powder.

Safety04

Who should be careful with probiotic bacteria?

People with severe illness or a weakened immune system face a greater risk of harm from probiotics (NCCIH, Probiotics: usefulness and safety).

Ask a doctor first if that fits you. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and read the side-effects guide for the other lines in the tub.

The pilot also does not show digestive benefit. Its aims were safety and metabolic markers (Depommier 2019, Akkermansia pilot trial (Nature Medicine)).

Decide05

Is the Akkermansia line a reason to buy Finessa?

It is a point of interest, not proof. One pilot of 40 people cannot back a claim for this powder.

Compare it with the rest of the formula in the ingredients guide, then decide.

FAQ06

Questions about Akkermansia

Is Akkermansia the same as a regular probiotic?

Not quite. Common probiotics are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species. Akkermansia is a different gut bacterium, and different probiotics can act differently, so one result does not carry over to another (NCCIH, Probiotics: usefulness and safety).

Was the Akkermansia pilot about digestion?

No. Its main aims were safety and metabolic markers in overweight, insulin-resistant adults. Bowel habit and constipation were not the primary outcomes (Depommier 2019, Akkermansia pilot trial (Nature Medicine)).

Can a 2 mg powder be checked for live cells?

Only with a lab count. Weight does not equal viable cells (NIH ODS, Probiotics fact sheet (CFU, label)). Ask the seller for the lot's certificate of analysis, since the label images we have show no testing.

Does Finessa say how many Akkermansia cells it holds?

No. The panel prints 2 mg and the strain name AH39, with no CFU for that line. The only CFU numbers are for the blend, and the tub and panel disagree on those.
