Finessa Fiber and Other Ingredients: FOS, Resistant Dextrin and Stevia

Quick answer

Finessa's fiber is fructooligosaccharides (FOS), a prebiotic fiber listed last in the 755 mg Gut Health blend, so at most about 151 mg a scoop by our arithmetic. Resistant dextrin, flavor, citric acid, sea salt, stevia and silicon dioxide make up the base. Studies of FOS used grams, not milligrams.

Prebiotic fiber01

What is the fructooligosaccharides supplement ingredient in Finessa?

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are short chains of plant sugars that people cannot digest. Gut bacteria feed on them, so they are called a prebiotic fiber.

On the Finessa panel, FOS is the fifth and last line of the 755 mg Gut Health blend. Lines are listed from most to least by weight, and the blend total is the only amount printed (21 CFR 101.36 (proprietary blends)).

That order gives a ceiling. Line 5 of a 755 mg blend weighs at most 755 divided by 5, which is 151 mg. This is our arithmetic from the label order, not a lab test. The true amount could be well below it.

For scale, 151 mg is about 0.15 g. A scoop is under 2 g in total by the tub weight, so even the ceiling is a small part of it.

  2. Gut Health755 mg
  3. Liver Health Blend450 mg
  4. Probiotic Blend52 mg
  5. Akkermansia2 mg

From the Supplement Facts panel: four blends and one strain line. The bars share one scale, so the probiotic lines look tiny next to the plant blends. Milligrams of live bacteria and billions of CFU are not the same measure.

See the other lines of the blend on the Supplement Facts page.

Dose02

How much FOS do studies use compared with a Finessa scoop?

Studies use grams a day. Finessa holds at most about 0.15 g.

In one trial, 116 healthy adults took 15 g or 20 g of short-chain FOS a day for a week, then doubled to 30 g and 40 g. It was well tolerated up to 40 g a day, with very mild symptoms (Le Bourgot 2022, scFOS tolerance (Nutrients)).

That trial tested a purified fiber in healthy people. It did not test constipation relief, and it did not test Finessa. Even so, the gap is wide: Finessa's ceiling is under 1% of the lowest dose in the trial.

FOS: the trial doses against the most one Finessa scoop can hold

So one scoop will not make up a fiber gap. Food does that: beans, whole grains, fruit and vegetables. See digestive habits for easy ways to get there.

Resistant dextrin03

What is the resistant dextrin supplement ingredient in Finessa?

Resistant dextrin is a soluble fiber made from starch. In Finessa it is the first of the "other ingredients".

The panel gives no weight for it. Other ingredients are listed from most to least by weight, so it likely outweighs the flavor, acid, salt and stevia. It likely gives the powder bulk and body. We cannot say how many milligrams it holds.

A 2018 meta-analysis of 29 trials found that resistant maltodextrin, a related fiber, raised stool volume and frequency versus placebo (Le Bourgot 2022, scFOS tolerance (Nutrients)). That is a different product, and the abstract gives no dose. We do not read it as proof that Finessa does the same.

Like FOS, resistant dextrin can cause gas at the start. NIDDK advises adding fiber a little at a time, with plenty of fluids (NIDDK, Constipation treatment).

The base04

What are the other ingredients in Finessa?

Six lines: resistant dextrin, natural flavors, citric acid, sea salt, stevia extract (leaf) and silicon dioxide.

None has a printed amount. They are not active ingredients, and they shape taste, mixing and shelf life.

The six "other ingredients" on the Finessa panel and what each is for
IngredientRole in the powderAmount
Resistant dextrinSoluble fiber, adds bulkNot printed
Natural flavorsTaste; the source is not namedNot printed
Citric acidTart taste and shelf lifeNot printed

"Natural flavors" can hide many compounds, and the label does not say which. If you react to a food additive, ask the order desk for the full ingredient detail before you buy.

Nutrition lines05

What do the calories, carbohydrate and minerals on the label mean?

They are small. A scoop lists 10 calories, 3 g of carbohydrate, 1 mcg of selenium, 40 mg of sodium and 10 mg of potassium.

The 1 mcg of selenium is about 1.8% of the 55 mcg adult RDA, so it neither meets a need nor risks an excess (NIH ODS, Selenium fact sheet). The panel prints 2%, which is that figure rounded.

Sodium, 40 mg, is 2% of the Daily Value and likely comes from the sea salt. Potassium, 10 mg, is under 1%.

The potassium line matters for one reason. Cascara sagrada, in the same powder, can lower potassium and sodium with long use (MSK, Cascara (About Herbs)). Ten milligrams of potassium does not offset that.

The carbohydrate number does not fit

The panel prints 3 g of carbohydrate, yet 96 g across 50 servings is only about 1.92 g a scoop. We do not know which number is off. Ask for the lot's certificate of analysis, and trust the tub you receive.

Stimulant free?06

Is Finessa stimulant free?

Only in one sense. The panel lists no caffeine. It does list cascara sagrada, a stimulant laxative.

People who search "stimulant free" usually mean no caffeine, no jitters and no effect on sleep. On that count the panel shows nothing of the kind, though the label images we were given are only the tub front and the panel.

A stimulant laxative is another thing. It makes the bowel muscle contract. Cascara sits third in the Gut Health blend, at most about 251 mg, and has the cautions in the next section (MSK, Cascara (About Herbs)). Read cascara sagrada in Finessa.

Cautions07

Who should be careful with the fiber and base ingredients?

Anyone with a sensitive gut, a bowel condition or a medicine list should ask a doctor first.

Finessa is a supplement, not a medicine for any bowel condition. See Finessa side effects for the full list.

FAQ08

Finessa fiber and base ingredient questions

How much FOS is in Finessa?

Not printed. FOS is the last of five lines in the 755 mg Gut Health blend, so it weighs at most about 151 mg a scoop by our arithmetic. Studies of the fiber used 15 to 40 g a day (Le Bourgot 2022, scFOS tolerance (Nutrients)).

What does fructooligosaccharides do in a supplement?

It acts as a prebiotic, a fiber that gut bacteria feed on. In Finessa the amount is small, at most about 0.15 g. Trial doses were many times higher, so the studies do not carry over.

What is resistant dextrin in Finessa?

It is a soluble fiber made from starch and the first of the six other ingredients. Its weight is not printed. Like other fibers, it can cause gas at the start, so go slowly.

Is Finessa stimulant free?

It lists no caffeine, but it does list cascara sagrada, a stimulant laxative herb. So it is free of caffeine on the panel and not free of a bowel stimulant. Ask a doctor first if that matters to you.

Does Finessa have added sugar or sweetener?

The panel does not split out sugars. It lists stevia extract (leaf) as a sweetener among the other ingredients. A scoop has 10 calories and 3 g of carbohydrate, which does not match the tub weight.

Is the sodium in Finessa a problem?

Forty milligrams is 2% of the Daily Value, so it is small. It likely comes from the sea salt. People on a strict low-sodium plan should still ask their care team.

Can FOS cause gas or bloating?

Yes, for some people, especially at the start. Short-chain FOS was well tolerated up to 40 g a day in healthy adults, with very mild symptoms (Le Bourgot 2022, scFOS tolerance (Nutrients)). Add fiber gradually and drink fluids.

Does the silicon dioxide in Finessa matter?

It is an anti-caking agent that keeps the powder from clumping, and its amount is not printed. It is not an active ingredient. If you have a known additive allergy, ask the order desk.
