Ingredient profile

Finessa Cascara Sagrada: The Laxative Herb in the Powder, Dose and Safety

Quick answer

Cascara sagrada in Finessa is a stimulant-laxative herb, listed as extract 10:1 in the Gut Health blend. It sits third of five lines, so by our label arithmetic it weighs at most about 251 mg a scoop. The FDA removed cascara from OTC laxative drugs in 2002, and the sales page still says "no known side effects".

What it is01

What is cascara sagrada, and why is it in Finessa?

Cascara sagrada is a dried tree bark that holds compounds called anthraquinone glycosides, which act as a laxative (University of Rochester Medical Center, Cascara Sagrada (Health Encyclopedia)). Finessa lists it as "cascara sagrada extract 10:1".

It is the one ingredient on the panel with a clear, strong effect on the body. MSK calls cascara "a strong laxative" with a well-documented action on the large intestine (MSK, Cascara (About Herbs)).

The brand's marketing graphic leaves it out, but the panel and the sales page include it. Finessa is a powder supplement, not a laxative drug.

The dose02

How much cascara sagrada is in a Finessa scoop?

At most about 251 mg of extract. The panel prints no amount for cascara, so this ceiling comes from the order of the lines, not from a lab.

The Gut Health blend totals 755 mg and lists five lines from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36 (proprietary blends)). Cascara is third. A third line cannot weigh more than a third of the blend, so 755 divided by 3 is about 251 mg. It could be far less.

The Rochester entry names a usual dose of about 300 mg once a day (University of Rochester Medical Center, Cascara Sagrada (Health Encyclopedia)), close to our ceiling, but it does not say whether that is bark or extract. The label does not add up either, so treat any amount as soft. See every line on the panel.

How it works03

Is cascara sagrada a laxative?

Yes. Cascara is a stimulant laxative. It stirs the large intestine to move and pulls water and salts, such as sodium and potassium, out with the stool (MSK, Cascara (About Herbs)).

NIDDK lists stimulant laxatives as a last-step option: only when constipation is severe or other treatments have not worked (NIDDK, Constipation treatment). Most constipation is handled with fiber, fluids and activity first.

That puts cascara in a different class from the fiber and probiotic lines in the powder. Fiber adds bulk. A stimulant forces the issue. Compare the three kinds in laxatives vs supplements.

Moving stool is its documented effect (MSK, Cascara (About Herbs)). That is not gut health or liver support, and nothing shows that the amount in one scoop does anything at all.

FDA history04

Did the FDA ban cascara sagrada?

Not as a supplement ingredient. A 2002 FDA final rule took cascara out of over-the-counter laxative drugs, calling it not generally recognized as safe and effective (FDA 2002 final rule, cascara sagrada and aloe (Federal Register)).

The reason was missing data. In 1998 the FDA asked for tests on genetic damage and cancer risk. No one sent any for cascara, so it moved to the category of ingredients that cannot be sold as OTC laxatives (FDA 2002 final rule, cascara sagrada and aloe (Federal Register)).

The rule covers laxative drug products. It does not by itself address cascara sold as a dietary ingredient, so "banned" would be the wrong word. A fair summary: the FDA removed cascara from OTC laxative drugs in 2002 for lack of safety data.

The Rochester entry says manufacturers had not done the studies to show cascara's safety (University of Rochester Medical Center, Cascara Sagrada (Health Encyclopedia)). The sales page calls that entry a "study", which it is not.

The sales claim05

Does Finessa really have "no known side effects"?

No. The sales page says "no known side effects", but the cascara in the powder has known ones.

Cascara side effects named by public health sources
EffectSource
Abdominal cramps and diarrheaMSK (MSK, Cascara (About Herbs)), Rochester (University of Rochester Medical Center, Cascara Sagrada (Health Encyclopedia))
Low potassium, sodium and chloride with long useMSK (MSK, Cascara (About Herbs))
Cases of liver inflammation (hepatitis)MSK (MSK, Cascara (About Herbs))
Dehydration and low potassium in childrenRochester (University of Rochester Medical Center, Cascara Sagrada (Health Encyclopedia))

Whether one scoop causes these is not known, because no one has tested Finessa. But "no known side effects" cannot sit next to a strong laxative. See Finessa side effects.

Safety06

Who should not take cascara sagrada?

Ask a doctor before cascara if you take heart or water-pill medicines, are pregnant or nursing, or have bowel disease. Do not give it to children.

Potassium and heart medicine

Cascara can drain potassium (MSK, Cascara (About Herbs)). If you take water pills (diuretics) or digoxin, a heart medicine that is sensitive to potassium, ask your prescriber first.

Pregnancy and nursing

The Rochester entry says it is not for pregnant or breastfeeding women, because a nursing infant may get diarrhea (University of Rochester Medical Center, Cascara Sagrada (Health Encyclopedia)).

Bowel conditions

The same entry says not to use it with stomach pain, nausea or vomiting, or with Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis or IBS (University of Rochester Medical Center, Cascara Sagrada (Health Encyclopedia)).

It is also listed as not safe for children (University of Rochester Medical Center, Cascara Sagrada (Health Encyclopedia)). Yellow skin or eyes need a doctor the same day.

Keep taking prescribed medicine

Do not stop a medicine because of what you read here. Tell your care team about every supplement (FDA, Mixing medications and supplements).

How long07

Can you take cascara sagrada every day?

Not for long. The Rochester entry advises no more than 6 days in a row, and MSK says prolonged use is not recommended (MSK, Cascara (About Herbs)) (University of Rochester Medical Center, Cascara Sagrada (Health Encyclopedia)).

The sales page tells readers to use Finessa once daily and for "at least 6 months". That does not fit either source, and no study backs it. NIDDK also says that if you have taken laxatives for a long time and cannot go without them, you should talk with your doctor about stopping slowly (NIDDK, Constipation treatment).

Blood in the stool, constant belly pain or constipation that lasts need a doctor, not a daily powder (NIDDK, Constipation symptoms and causes).

Blue bars: the most one scoop can hold of that ingredient, from the label-order arithmetic. Gold bars: daily amounts used in research. The label hides single amounts inside each blend, so the scoop figures are ceilings, not measured amounts. This is our arithmetic, not a lab test. Research amounts are for the whole herb or standardized extract named, and may differ from the form in the powder.

The bars above show four other lines in a scoop against research doses. Cascara has no research bar, because no study set a dose for a supplement like this.

FAQ08

Cascara sagrada questions

Is cascara sagrada a laxative?

Yes. It is a stimulant laxative that moves the large intestine and pulls water and salts out with the stool. MSK calls it a strong laxative (MSK, Cascara (About Herbs)). In Finessa it sits in the Gut Health blend.

How much cascara sagrada is in Finessa?

The panel prints no amount. Cascara is third of five lines in a 755 mg blend, so it weighs at most about 251 mg a scoop by our label arithmetic. It could be much less.

What are cascara sagrada side effects?

Cramps and diarrhea are the common ones. Long use can lower potassium and sodium, and MSK names cases of liver inflammation (MSK, Cascara (About Herbs)). Stop and call a doctor if cramps are severe or stools are watery.

Did the FDA remove cascara from laxatives?

Yes, in the over-the-counter drug category. A 2002 final rule said cascara in OTC laxatives is not generally recognized as safe and effective, since no safety data came in (FDA 2002 final rule, cascara sagrada and aloe (Federal Register)). The rule does not itself cover dietary supplements.

Is cascara sagrada safe to take every day?

Public sources advise against it. The Rochester entry says no more than 6 days, and MSK says prolonged use is not recommended (MSK, Cascara (About Herbs)) (University of Rochester Medical Center, Cascara Sagrada (Health Encyclopedia)). Ask a doctor before any daily use.

Can I take cascara sagrada while pregnant?

The Rochester entry says it is not for pregnant or breastfeeding women (University of Rochester Medical Center, Cascara Sagrada (Health Encyclopedia)). Finessa lists cascara, so pregnant or nursing readers should ask their doctor before using the powder.

Why does the sales page say no known side effects?

We cannot say. The phrase appears on the sales page, yet cascara has documented effects such as cramps and electrolyte loss (MSK, Cascara (About Herbs)). The sales page cites no trial of Finessa itself.
