Black Currant Powder Supplement: What Berry Polyphenol Trials Show

Do berry powders change gut bacteria?
Not in the trials we found. Berries eaten for 8 to 12 weeks had no significant effect on gut microbiota.
That comes from a review that found only three qualifying randomized trials, with low or unclear quality (Sweeney 2022, berry polyphenols and gut microbiota (RCT review)). Black currant was not among the berries named. More trials are needed.

Questions about berry powders
Are berry powders as good as whole berries?
We cannot say. Trials used berries, extracts or supplements, and results were mixed with low quality (Sweeney 2022, berry polyphenols and gut microbiota (RCT review)). Whole fruit also brings fiber and water, which a small powder line does not.
Is black currant the same as red currant?
No. They are different fruits, and the panel names black currant. We found no source in our set comparing the two, so check the label of any product you compare.
Does Finessa list the polyphenol content?
No. It prints a 1,000 mg weight for the blend, not a polyphenol amount. The weight is plant powder, not a measured count of polyphenols (Sweeney 2022, berry polyphenols and gut microbiota (RCT review)).
