Cassia Cinnamon and Coumarin: What a Label Reader Should Know
Cassia cinnamon coumarin is the pairing to know: cassia is the most common cinnamon in North America, and it contains coumarin, which has been reported to affect the liver. Finessa lists cinnamon (cassia) bark first in its 755 mg Gut Health blend, so by our arithmetic it weighs 151 to 755 mg.

The spice01
What is cassia cinnamon and why does coumarin matter?
Cassia is the most common cinnamon sold in North America, and it contains coumarin, a chemical that has been reported to interact with the liver (NCCIH, Cinnamon (cassia and coumarin)).
Ordinary food amounts usually carry too little coumarin to cause problems. Some cassia products, however, contain high levels. Ceylon cinnamon may hold only trace amounts (NCCIH, Cinnamon (cassia and coumarin)).
On the label02
How much cassia cinnamon is in a Finessa scoop?
Between 151 mg and 755 mg, by our arithmetic from the label order. It is not a lab test.
The panel lists "cinnamon (cassia) bark" first in the Gut Health blend of 755 mg, which has five lines. Blend rules hide single amounts (21 CFR 101.36 (proprietary blends)), but first place means the heaviest line. It must weigh at least a fifth of 755 mg.
| Line | Place | At most |
|---|---|---|
| Cinnamon (cassia) bark | 1 | 755 mg |
| Ginger powder | 2 | 377 mg |
| Cascara sagrada extract 10:1 | 3 | 251 mg |
No coumarin amount is printed, and no lab report is published.
Evidence03
Does cassia cinnamon help digestion or blood sugar?
Research does not clearly support cinnamon for any health condition (NCCIH, Cinnamon (cassia and coumarin)).
NCCIH says it is unclear whether cinnamon helps diabetes or weight loss, partly because studies often do not say which species or part was tested (NCCIH, Cinnamon (cassia and coumarin)). Finessa makes no blood sugar claim, and neither do we.
Cinnamon taken with statins has also been reported to cause hepatitis, and it may theoretically raise prothrombin time (NCCIH, Cinnamon (cassia and coumarin)).

When should you stop and call a doctor?
Stop and call a doctor if you notice signs of liver trouble, such as yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or severe stomach pain.
Herbal and dietary supplements are involved in roughly 10% of US drug-induced liver injury cases, and multi-ingredient products are hard to assess (LiverTox, Herbal and dietary supplements overview). That is not proof Finessa harms the liver. Keep taking prescribed medicine and see the side-effects guide.
- Blood in the stool, or black, tarry stoolsStop and call your doctor the same day. This is not a supplement problem to wait out.
- Severe belly pain, vomiting or a swollen bellyStop and get care now. A blocked bowel needs a doctor, and laxative herbs make it worse.
- Yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or pale stoolsStop and call your doctor the same day. Liver problems have been reported with some herbal extracts.
- Rash, swelling or hivesStop. Trouble breathing or a swollen face or throat needs 911.
- Muscle weakness, cramps, palpitations or dizzinessStop and call your doctor. Heavy laxative use can lower potassium, which matters if you take heart or water pills.
- Diarrhea that lasts more than two days, or you feel dried outStop, drink fluids and call your doctor. Do not take a laxative herb for weeks to 'cleanse'.
Call 911For chest pain, trouble breathing, a swollen face or throat, or if someone passes out.
Cascara and laxative safety (MSK, Cascara (About Herbs)) (FDA 2002 final rule, cascara sagrada and aloe (Federal Register)); liver reports (LiverTox, Herbal and dietary supplements overview); supplements and medicines (FDA, Mixing medications and supplements).

Should cassia stop you from buying Finessa?

FAQ06
Questions about cassia and coumarin
Is cassia the same as Ceylon cinnamon?
No. They are different species. Cassia is the common type in North America and has more coumarin, while Ceylon may hold only trace amounts (NCCIH, Cinnamon (cassia and coumarin)). The panel says cassia.
Is the coumarin in Finessa measured?
No. The panel prints no coumarin amount, and no lab report is published. Only the 755 mg blend total is shown, with lines in order of weight.
Can people with liver disease take cassia?
Ask a doctor first. NCCIH says prolonged use of cassia could be an issue for sensitive people, such as those with liver disease (NCCIH, Cinnamon (cassia and coumarin)).
