CFU on Probiotic Labels: Why Manufacture Date vs Expiry Matters

Quick answer

CFU on probiotic labels means colony-forming units, a count of live, viable cells. A count taken at manufacture can overstate what is left at expiry, so the NIH advises looking for CFU at the end of shelf life. Finessa's tub says 3 Billion CFU and its panel says 5 Billion at manufacture.

The term01

What does CFU on probiotic labels mean?

CFU stands for colony-forming units. It counts the viable cells in a product, meaning the cells that are alive (NIH ODS, Probiotics fact sheet (CFU, label)).

Federal label rules only require a company to list the total weight of the microbes. That weight has no relationship to the number of living cells, so CFU is added voluntarily (NIH ODS, Probiotics fact sheet (CFU, label)).

The date02

Is CFU at manufacture the same as CFU at expiry?

No. Probiotic microbes can die while a product sits on a shelf, so the count at expiry may be lower (NIH ODS, Probiotics fact sheet (CFU, label)).

The ODS tells shoppers to look for CFU at the end of the product's shelf life. ISAPP likewise advises avoiding products that list CFU only at the time of manufacture (NIH ODS, Probiotics fact sheet (CFU, label)).

Three ways a CFU number can be stated.
Stated asWhat it tells you
At manufactureCells when made; may fall later
At expiryCells promised through shelf life
Weight in mg onlyNothing about live cells

What CFU does Finessa print?

It prints two different numbers. The tub front says "3 Billion CFU" and the panel says 5 Billion CFU at the time of manufacture.

The panel also gives the blend as a weight, 52.5 mg. We do not know which number is off. Ask for the lot's certificate of analysis, and trust the tub you receive. Seller lot codes are references, not lab proof.

Blue bars: the most one scoop can hold of that ingredient, from the label-order arithmetic. Gold bars: daily amounts used in research. The label hides single amounts inside each blend, so the scoop figures are ceilings, not measured amounts. This is our arithmetic, not a lab test. Research amounts are for the whole herb or standardized extract named, and may differ from the form in the powder.

More is better?04

Is a higher CFU count always better?

No. Products with higher counts are not necessarily more effective (NIH ODS, Probiotics fact sheet (CFU, label)).

One strain trial gave 1 billion or 10 billion CFU a day of B. lactis BB-12 and saw similar effects at both doses, suggesting a ceiling at the lower dose (Eskesen 2015, BB-12 doses and defecation frequency). The result belongs to that strain, not to a blend. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and see a doctor if bowel symptoms continue.

Decide05

How should you read a probiotic label?

Look for strain names, a CFU count through expiry, and a lot-level test report.

Use the Supplement Facts guide to check the numbers on any tub.

FAQ06

Questions about CFU counts

What is a good CFU number for a probiotic?

There is no single good number. Trials state doses per strain, such as 1 and 10 billion CFU a day for BB-12 (Eskesen 2015, BB-12 doses and defecation frequency), and higher counts are not necessarily more effective (NIH ODS, Probiotics fact sheet (CFU, label)).

Can a probiotic label be wrong?

Yes. Some products have been reported to contain microorganisms other than those on the label, and labels may not match the strains inside (NCCIH, Probiotics: usefulness and safety) (NIH ODS, Probiotics fact sheet (CFU, label)).

Does weight in mg show live cells?

No. The ODS says the required weight has no relationship to the number of viable microorganisms (NIH ODS, Probiotics fact sheet (CFU, label)). A 52.5 mg blend therefore cannot tell you the CFU.
