Finessa Artichoke Extract: Bile Ducts, Cautions and Doses

Quick answer

Finessa artichoke extract is the fourth of five lines in the 450 mg Liver Health blend, standardized to 5% cynarin. By label order it is at most 112 mg a scoop, our arithmetic, not a lab test. The EMA lists bile duct obstruction and gallstones as cautions.

On the label01

Where is artichoke on the Finessa label?

It is the fourth of five lines in the Liver Health Blend, which totals 450 mg a scoop. The panel reads artichoke extract (std to 5% cynarin).

Single amounts are hidden, but parts are listed from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36 (proprietary blends)). That means line k weighs at most the total divided by k. For line 4, that is 450 divided by 4, or about 112 mg.

The order is dandelion, turmeric, milk thistle, artichoke, then silymarin. Our arithmetic from the label order, not a lab test, says artichoke is no more than 112 mg a scoop.

Dose02

Is the artichoke dose in Finessa like the doses in research?

Probably not. The European Medicines Agency lists artichoke leaf doses in the hundreds to thousands of milligrams (EMA, Artichoke leaf (Cynara) herbal monograph).

A ceiling of 112 mg is far below that range. The use is also traditional, not proven. Below, one scoop's ceiling sits beside research amounts.

Blue bars: the most one scoop can hold of that ingredient, from the label-order arithmetic. Gold bars: daily amounts used in research. The label hides single amounts inside each blend, so the scoop figures are ceilings, not measured amounts. This is our arithmetic, not a lab test. Research amounts are for the whole herb or standardized extract named, and may differ from the form in the powder.

Cautions03

Who should avoid artichoke extract?

People with bile duct obstruction, gallstones or liver disease should not use it without medical advice, says the EMA (EMA, Artichoke leaf (Cynara) herbal monograph).

Bile duct blockage can be serious. Pain, fever or yellow skin or eyes need urgent care (NIDDK, Gallstones symptoms and causes). Many gallstones are silent, so you may not know you have one.

The claims04

Does artichoke in Finessa support the liver?

We cannot say. No trial has tested Finessa, and artichoke use is traditional.

The tub says "Liver Cleansing" in its tagline, which we quote only as label wording. Finessa is a powder supplement, not a liver treatment. The gut-liver axis is a real research area, but not proof that a supplement works (Albillos 2020, gut-liver axis review (J Hepatol)). Herbal products also cause some drug-induced liver injury cases (LiverTox, Herbal and dietary supplements overview).

Read the Supplement Facts page and the side effects page. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and ask your pharmacist before adding a supplement (FDA, Mixing medications and supplements).

FAQ06

Questions about artichoke in Finessa

How much artichoke is in a Finessa scoop?

The panel hides the amount. From label order in the 450 mg blend, it is at most 112 mg a scoop. That is our arithmetic, not a lab test, and the true figure may be lower.

What does std to 5% cynarin mean?

It says the extract is standardized so that cynarin makes up 5% of its weight. It does not tell you how much extract is in the scoop, or that it does anything.

Can I take artichoke extract with gallstones?

Ask a doctor first. The EMA lists gallstones and bile duct obstruction as cautions (EMA, Artichoke leaf (Cynara) herbal monograph). Pain, fever or jaundice need urgent care (NIDDK, Gallstones symptoms and causes).

Is artichoke the same as silymarin?

No. Silymarin comes from milk thistle and is the fifth line in the blend. Artichoke is the fourth. Evidence for milk thistle is conflicting or limited (NCCIH, Milk thistle).
