The herb01
What is cascara sagrada in Finessa?
It is the dried bark of a buckthorn tree, used as a stimulant laxative. Finessa lists "cascara sagrada extract 10:1".
MSK calls cascara "a strong laxative" that pulls water and electrolytes out with the stool (MSK, Cascara (About Herbs)). The sales page names it among Finessa's ingredients (Finessa sales page). The brand's graphic leaves it out.
Finessa is a powder supplement. It is not a laxative drug, and it is not a treatment for any bowel disease.
The amount02
How much cascara sagrada is in a Finessa scoop?
Not printed. Cascara is third of five lines in the 755 mg Gut Health blend, so at most 251 mg. That is our arithmetic from the label order, not a lab test.
The Rochester entry the sales page cites gives about 300 mg for no more than 6 days (University of Rochester Medical Center, Cascara Sagrada (Health Encyclopedia)). That entry is an encyclopedia page, not a study. The bars below set one scoop's ceiling beside research amounts.
The FDA rule03
What did the FDA decide about cascara sagrada in 2002?
In a May 2002 final rule, FDA said cascara in over-the-counter laxative drugs is not generally recognized as safe and effective (FDA 2002 final rule, cascara sagrada and aloe (Federal Register)).
No safety data were sent in when FDA asked. The rule covers laxative drug products. It does not ban cascara in supplements, and we do not say it does.

Who should avoid cascara sagrada?
People who are pregnant, nursing or under 18 should not use it, and anyone with liver, kidney, heart or bowel disease should ask a doctor first (University of Rochester Medical Center, Cascara Sagrada (Health Encyclopedia)).
MSK says prolonged use is not recommended because of electrolyte imbalance and possible liver toxicity (MSK, Cascara (About Herbs)). NIDDK says stimulants fit only severe constipation, or when other steps failed (NIDDK, Constipation treatment).
Keep taking prescribed medicine, and tell your pharmacist about Finessa (FDA, Mixing medications and supplements).
Your decision05
How should you decide about a cascara-containing powder?
Treat the cascara line as the first thing to discuss with a clinician, not the last.
See the cascara ingredient page and side effects. Stop and call a doctor for severe cramps, constant diarrhea or muscle weakness.

FAQ06
Questions about cascara in Finessa
Is cascara sagrada in Finessa safe?
Safety depends on dose, time and your health. MSK warns that prolonged use can lower potassium and sodium and may harm the liver (MSK, Cascara (About Herbs)). Ask a clinician before you start.
Is cascara banned by the FDA?
No. FDA removed cascara from over-the-counter laxative drug products in 2002 for lack of safety data (FDA 2002 final rule, cascara sagrada and aloe (Federal Register)). The rule does not address cascara sold as a dietary ingredient.
Will Finessa act like a laxative?
It might, because it contains a laxative herb. The amount is hidden, and no trial has tested Finessa. If you get cramps or loose stools, stop and ask a doctor.
Can I use Finessa every day with cascara?
The sales page directs one scoop daily for at least 6 months, citing no study. MSK advises against prolonged cascara use (MSK, Cascara (About Herbs)). Discuss daily use with your clinician.
