Finessa Licorice Extract: DGL vs Whole Licorice

Quick answer

Finessa licorice extract is printed as deglycyrrhizinated licorice extract, or DGL, which means the glycyrrhizin has been taken out. Whole licorice with glycyrrhizin can raise blood pressure and lower potassium. DGL is fourth of five lines in the 755 mg Gut Health blend, so it weighs at most about 188 mg.

The word01

What is licorice extract in Finessa?

It is deglycyrrhizinated licorice extract, a licorice root extract with glycyrrhizin removed.

The Supplement Facts panel lists it fourth in the Gut Health blend. That blend totals 755 mg for five lines, so the fourth line weighs at most 755 divided by 4, about 188 mg. This is our arithmetic from the label order, not a lab test.

Why DGL02

Why does DGL differ from whole licorice?

Because glycyrrhizin is the part that causes trouble. NCCIH says it can raise blood pressure, lower potassium and, in large or long-term amounts, disturb heart rhythm (NCCIH, Licorice root).

DGL still deserves a question to your pharmacist. The label does not say how much glycyrrhizin remains.

The evidence03

Does licorice extract help digestion?

Not proven. NCCIH says there is not enough high-quality evidence to support licorice for any health condition (NCCIH, Licorice root).

It calls it unclear whether licorice alone changes digestive symptoms. No trial has tested Finessa. The sales page, which says it will "support your liver, colon health, gut balance and smooth digestion", cites none for licorice.

Warning signs04

When should you stop Finessa and call a doctor?

Stop and call if you feel a pounding heartbeat, swelling or severe weakness. The cascara in the same blend can also drain potassium (MSK, Cascara (About Herbs)).

  1. Blood in the stool, or black, tarry stoolsStop and call your doctor the same day. This is not a supplement problem to wait out.
  2. Severe belly pain, vomiting or a swollen bellyStop and get care now. A blocked bowel needs a doctor, and laxative herbs make it worse.
  3. Yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or pale stoolsStop and call your doctor the same day. Liver problems have been reported with some herbal extracts.
  4. Rash, swelling or hivesStop. Trouble breathing or a swollen face or throat needs 911.
  5. Muscle weakness, cramps, palpitations or dizzinessStop and call your doctor. Heavy laxative use can lower potassium, which matters if you take heart or water pills.
  6. Diarrhea that lasts more than two days, or you feel dried outStop, drink fluids and call your doctor. Do not take a laxative herb for weeks to 'cleanse'.

Call 911For chest pain, trouble breathing, a swollen face or throat, or if someone passes out.

FAQ06

Questions about licorice in Finessa

Does Finessa contain glycyrrhizin?

The panel lists deglycyrrhizinated licorice, meaning glycyrrhizin was removed. It does not give the residual amount, so ask for a certificate of analysis if you take blood pressure medicine.

Is DGL the same as licorice candy?

No. Real licorice candy and teas can contain glycyrrhizin, and NCCIH warns even small amounts have affected some people (NCCIH, Licorice root). DGL is a different extract.

How much DGL is in one scoop?

Not printed. The blend total is 755 mg and DGL is fourth of five lines, so the ceiling is about 188 mg. The real amount could be lower.

Can licorice extract replace a digestive medicine?

No. Finessa is a supplement, not a drug. If you have ongoing bowel symptoms, see a doctor (NIDDK, Constipation symptoms and causes).
