Fructooligosaccharides Supplement: A Prebiotic Fiber and Its Gas
A fructooligosaccharides supplement is a prebiotic fiber made of short sugar chains that gut bacteria ferment. In one trial of 116 healthy adults it was well tolerated up to 40 g a day, with very mild symptoms. Finessa lists it fifth of five in its Gut Health blend.

The ingredient01
What is a fructooligosaccharides supplement?
It is a short-chain carbohydrate that people cannot digest well, so it reaches the colon and feeds bacteria there. That job is why it is called a prebiotic.
Fructooligosaccharides, or FOS, sit in the same family as inulin, but the chains are shorter. On the Finessa panel, FOS is the fifth and last line of the 755 mg Gut Health blend, after cinnamon, ginger, cascara sagrada and licorice extract.
The panel gives no separate FOS weight, which federal rules allow inside a blend (21 CFR 101.36 (proprietary blends)).
Tolerance02
Does FOS cause gas and bloating?
It can, because fermentation makes gas, but the trial evidence for short-chain FOS is calmer than many people expect.
In a 2022 trial, 116 healthy volunteers took 15 g or 20 g of short-chain FOS a day for a week, then double that for a third week. The authors called it well tolerated up to 40 g a day. Symptoms stayed very mild and stools stayed normal (Le Bourgot 2022, scFOS tolerance (Nutrients)).
Those were purified powders in healthy adults, and constipation was not tested. Add any fiber a little at a time and drink fluids with it (NIDDK, Constipation treatment).
| Question | Answer from the trial |
|---|---|
| Who took it | 116 healthy volunteers |
| Daily dose | 15 g or 20 g, then 30 g or 40 g |
| Symptoms | Very mild, stool consistency normal |
| Constipation tested | No |
Our arithmetic03
How much FOS could one Finessa scoop hold?
At most about 151 mg, which is our arithmetic from the label order, not a lab test.
The blend totals 755 mg with five lines. The last line can weigh no more than 755 divided by five. That ceiling is roughly one hundredth of the 15 g used in the tolerance trial.
So a scoop probably adds very little fiber on its own. The adult fiber target is 22 to 34 g a day depending on age and sex (NIDDK, Constipation treatment). The tub also lists resistant dextrin among its other ingredients, with no weight given.

Who should go slowly with a prebiotic fiber?
Anyone with a touchy gut, anyone who is adding several fibers at once, and anyone who cannot tell whether a symptom is a food reaction.
FOS is only one line. The same scoop holds cascara sagrada, a stimulant-laxative herb, and Finessa is a powder supplement, not a medicine for constipation or any bowel disease. If gas or loose stools appear, the cause could be any line. See the side effects page for stop signs.
Keep taking any prescribed medicine, and ask a pharmacist or doctor before adding a supplement (FDA, Mixing medications and supplements).

FAQ06
Questions about FOS
Is FOS the same as inulin?
They are close relatives. Both are fructan fibers, but FOS has shorter chains. The 2022 trial authors say short-chain FOS is better tolerated than longer-chain inulin-type fibers (Le Bourgot 2022, scFOS tolerance (Nutrients)).
Does Finessa say how much FOS it holds?
No. The panel prints only the 755 mg Gut Health total. FOS is last of five lines, so our arithmetic gives a ceiling near 151 mg a scoop. That is a calculation, not a measured amount.
Can FOS help constipation?
The tolerance trial did not test constipation, so it cannot answer that. NIDDK points to fiber from food, fluids, activity and a doctor's advice for ongoing symptoms (NIDDK, Constipation treatment).
Should I add FOS slowly?
Yes, with any fiber. NIDDK advises adding fiber a little at a time and drinking enough fluids. A gradual start gives your gut time to adjust and shows what causes a symptom (NIDDK, Constipation treatment).
