Lactobacillus Acidophilus Probiotic: Strain Names and Labels
A Lactobacillus acidophilus probiotic is a named species of live bacteria, and effects depend on the exact strain. Finessa prints L. acidophilus twice: once with no strain and once as 30% L. acidophilus LA85. The panel gives 5 Billion CFU at manufacture; the tub front says 3 Billion CFU.

Names01
What is a Lactobacillus acidophilus probiotic strain?
A strain is one specific lineage within a species, usually named with letters and numbers, such as LA85.
NCCIH says different probiotics may have different effects, so what one Lactobacillus does does not mean another would do the same (NCCIH, Probiotics: usefulness and safety). Without a strain code, a species name tells you little.
Finessa's panel lists plain L. acidophilus in its Probiotic Blend and a separate line, 30% L. acidophilus LA85. The panel does not say what that percentage is of.
Evidence02
Is there research on this strain?
We found none in our verified sources, and no trial has tested Finessa.
The best-known constipation review pooled 14 trials of other products. It found 1.3 more bowel movements a week overall, significant for Bifidobacterium lactis but not for L. casei Shirota (Dimidi 2014, probiotics and functional constipation meta-analysis). That result does not name LA85.
NCCIH adds that in most instances we do not know which probiotics help (NCCIH, Probiotics: usefulness and safety).
The label03
Why do the CFU numbers on the label differ?
The tub front says 3 Billion CFU and the panel says 5 Billion CFU at the time of manufacture. We do not know which is off.
NIH advises looking for CFU at the end of shelf life, since microbes can die in storage (NIH ODS, Probiotics fact sheet (CFU, label)). A count at manufacture is the weaker promise. Ask for the lot's certificate of analysis. See the label vs sales page comparison.

FAQ05
Questions about L. acidophilus
Is L. acidophilus the same as LA85?
No. L. acidophilus is the species; LA85 is a strain code printed on the panel. Finessa also lists L. acidophilus with no strain, which cannot be traced to any trial.
What does CFU mean?
CFU means colony-forming units, the number of viable cells. The weight in milligrams on a label has no relationship to the number of living microbes (NIH ODS, Probiotics fact sheet (CFU, label)).
Do all probiotics work the same?
No. NCCIH says effects differ between probiotics, and a result for one Lactobacillus does not apply to another or to a Bifidobacterium (NCCIH, Probiotics: usefulness and safety).
Which CFU figure should I trust on Finessa?
Trust the tub you receive and ask for a certificate of analysis. The panel and tub front disagree, and neither gives a count at the end of shelf life.
