Silicon Dioxide in Supplements, Plus Stevia and Sea Salt

Quick answer

Silicon dioxide in supplements is a flow agent: a fine, inert powder that stops other powders from clumping. Finessa lists it last among its other ingredients, after resistant dextrin, natural flavors, citric acid, sea salt and stevia extract. None of these six is an active ingredient.

Flow agent01

What is silicon dioxide in supplements?

Silicon dioxide is a fine, inert mineral powder added to keep other powders loose so they pour and scoop without caking.

It is also called silica. In a tub that is opened often and exposed to humid air, a flow agent helps the scoop level. It is not a nutrient and is not there for a health effect.

The panel prints it last. That placement fits the usual weight order, so we expect it to be the smallest share, though no amount is printed.

The other five02

What do stevia, citric acid, sea salt and natural flavors do?

Each one handles taste or texture. None of them is a dietary ingredient with a claim.

ItemUsual job
Resistant dextrinSoluble fiber used as a powder base
Natural flavorsTaste; the source is not named
Citric acidTart taste and acidity
Sea saltFlavor balance
Stevia extract (leaf)Sweetness with almost no calories
Silicon dioxideKeeps the powder from clumping

"Natural flavors" is the vague one. The label does not say what they are made from, so people with food allergies should ask the seller.

The sodium line03

How much sodium does the sea salt add?

The panel prints sodium at 40 mg a scoop, which is 2% of the Daily Value. Potassium is 10 mg, under 1%.

That is small next to a typical day of food. Part of the 40 mg could come from the salt and part from other ingredients, and the label does not split it.

People on a low-sodium plan or with kidney or heart conditions should still count it and ask their doctor. Our label math also shows the printed weights do not all fit in one scoop, so treat every amount as a printed claim, not a measured one. See the Supplement Facts page.

Calories and carbs

The panel lists 10 calories and 3 g of total carbohydrate a scoop. Stevia supplies sweetness without adding much of either.

Safety04

Are these other ingredients safe for everyone?

They are common food-grade items, but "natural" does not mean safe for every person (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements: What You Need To Know).

The bigger cautions come from the active herbs, not from this line. Cascara sagrada is a strong laxative that can lower potassium and sodium with prolonged use (MSK, Cascara (About Herbs)). Keep taking prescribed medicine, and tell your pharmacist about any new powder.

Read the side effects page for the full list of cautions.

Check the tub05

What can you check on your own tub?

Read the other ingredients line on the tub you receive and compare it with the panel image.

One scoop by printed number, on one scale

  1. Polyphenol Blend1,000 mg
  2. Gut Health755 mg
  3. Liver Health Blend450 mg
  4. Probiotic Blend52 mg
  5. Akkermansia2 mg

From the Supplement Facts panel: four blends and one strain line. The bars share one scale, so the probiotic lines look tiny next to the plant blends. Milligrams of live bacteria and billions of CFU are not the same measure.

Anything that does not match is worth an email or a call to the seller. The tub is the truth, not the web page.

FAQ06

Questions about the other ingredients

Is silicon dioxide dangerous?

As a flow agent it is a standard food-grade additive used in tiny amounts. Dose and the rest of the formula matter more. Ask your doctor if you have a specific concern.

Does stevia raise blood sugar?

Stevia extract provides sweetness with almost no calories, and the Finessa panel lists 10 calories a scoop. We make no claim about blood sugar, so ask your doctor if you manage diabetes.

Are natural flavors always plant based?

Not necessarily. The term covers flavors from plants or animals, and the label does not say which. Ask the seller if you avoid certain foods or have allergies.
