Silymarin 80 Percent: Reading the Label Phrase
Silymarin 80 percent means the extract was standardized so that about 80% of its weight is silymarin, the group of compounds in milk thistle seed. Finessa prints it as "silymarin 80% (as silibinin)" as the last line of the Liver Health Blend, so it weighs at most 90 mg a scoop by our arithmetic.

The phrase01
What does silymarin 80 percent mean on a label?
It means the maker standardized the extract, so about 80% of the extract's weight is silymarin rather than plain seed powder.
Silymarin is the main constituent of milk thistle extract (NCCIH, Milk thistle). It is a mix of related compounds, and silibinin is the largest one. The phrase "as silibinin" tells you how the 80% was measured.
The label does not say which test method was used. A certificate of analysis for the lot would show it.
The ceiling02
How much silymarin could one Finessa scoop hold?
At most 90 mg of the extract, and 72 mg of silymarin at 80%. That is our arithmetic from the label order, not a lab test.
The Liver Health Blend is 450 mg with five lines: dandelion, turmeric, milk thistle, artichoke extract and silymarin 80%. Silymarin is fifth, so it weighs at most 450 divided by 5, which is 90 mg. Milk thistle powder is third, with a ceiling of 150 mg.
| Place | Line | At most |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dandelion powder | 450 mg |
| 2 | Turmeric powder | 225 mg |
| 3 | Milk thistle powder | 150 mg |
| 4 | Artichoke extract (5% cynarin) | 112 mg |
| 5 | Silymarin 80% (as silibinin) | 90 mg |
Compared with research03
How does that compare with products in research?
It is a small fraction. NIH LiverTox notes that milk thistle products contain silymarin in amounts of 250 to 750 mg per dose, taken two or three times a day (NCCIH, Milk thistle).
One Finessa scoop is capped at 72 mg of silymarin by the label order. Studies of other products do not tell us what this one does, and no trial has tested Finessa.

What does research say about milk thistle and the liver?
NCCIH says the high-quality evidence is not enough for definite conclusions. For liver conditions the results have been conflicting or too limited (NCCIH, Milk thistle).
Two NCCIH-funded studies, in hepatitis C and in fatty liver disease, showed no benefit from silymarin. Finessa is a powder supplement. It is not a liver treatment, and the tub's "Liver Cleansing" wording is a label phrase, not a proven result (NCCIH, Detoxes and cleanses).
Safety05
Who should be careful with a silymarin supplement?
People allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemum, marigold or daisy can react to milk thistle (NCCIH, Milk thistle).
Product quality also varies: some contain silymarin in amounts very different from the label. Common effects are bloating, nausea and gas. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you take any medicine, and keep taking prescribed medicine (FDA, Mixing medications and supplements).

FAQ06
Questions about silymarin labels
Is silymarin the same as milk thistle?
Not quite. Milk thistle is the plant. Silymarin is the group of compounds in its seed, and the main constituent of the extract (NCCIH, Milk thistle). Finessa lists both milk thistle powder and silymarin 80%.
What is silibinin?
Silibinin is the largest compound in the silymarin mix. The phrase "as silibinin" says the 80% figure is expressed in that compound, though the label does not name the test.
Does 80 percent mean 80 percent of a scoop?
No. It describes the extract, not the scoop. At most 90 mg of the extract is in a scoop by our arithmetic, so silymarin is at most about 72 mg.
