Supplement Strikethrough Prices: What the FTC Rule Says

Quick answer

Supplement strikethrough prices show a higher "was" price crossed out next to a lower one. The FTC says a former price is fair only if it was the actual price offered to the public regularly for a reasonably substantial time. This site shows no struck-through prices.

The tactic01

What are supplement strikethrough prices?

They are crossed-out higher prices placed beside the real price, so the lower one looks like a bargain.

A page might show a big number with a line through it, then a smaller price in bold. Some add words like "You Save" or a timer. The crossed-out number is only useful to a buyer if it is a real price.

The FTC guide02

What does the FTC say about former price comparisons?

A former price is legitimate only if it was the actual, bona fide price offered to the public on a regular basis for a reasonably substantial time (16 CFR Part 233, Guides Against Deceptive Pricing).

If the former price is not bona fide but fictitious, such as an artificial, inflated price set so a large reduction can be advertised, the bargain is a false one. The guide covers words like "Regularly," "Usually" and "Formerly" too (16 CFR Part 233, Guides Against Deceptive Pricing).

These Guides Against Deceptive Pricing are FTC guidance, not a statute. They still show how regulators think about crossed-out prices.

Red flags03

How can you tell if a was price is fair?

You usually cannot from the page alone, so look for the signs the FTC guide lists.

Signs of a doubtful former price, from FTC 16 CFR 233.1.
SignWhat it means
Never offeredThe crossed-out price was never charged
Not regular businessIt was not used in the normal course of selling
Remote pastIt was used long ago, with no mention of that
Always on saleThe "deal" never ends and the price never changes

The first three come from the guide (16 CFR Part 233, Guides Against Deceptive Pricing). The fourth is our plain-language reading of the same idea.

On the sales page04

What does the Finessa sales page show?

It shows a crossed-out higher price next to $59, $49 and $39 per bottle, with "You Save" lines on the multi-bottle packs (Finessa sales page).

We cannot check from the page whether the crossed-out price was ever a real one, so we do not call it a discount, a regular price or a saving. We show none of it.

This site lists only the current prices: $59 for one bottle, $49 each for three ($147) and $39 each for six ($234). Shipping on the first two is added at checkout. The pricing page has the full table, and the guarantee page explains the 180-day window.

Your move05

How should you compare supplement prices instead?

Compare the cost per serving and the refund window, and ignore the crossed-out number.

By the panel's 50 servings, our arithmetic gives $1.18, $0.98 and $0.78 a scoop for the three packs. The sales page counts a bottle as 30 days and prints $1.97, $1.63 and $1.30 a day. Both are shown so you can see the gap.

FAQ06

Questions about crossed-out prices

Are strikethrough prices illegal?

Not by themselves. The FTC guide says a former price is fine if it was the real price offered regularly for a substantial time, and false if it is fictitious (16 CFR Part 233, Guides Against Deceptive Pricing).

Why does this site show no crossed-out prices?

We cannot verify that the crossed-out figure on the sales page was ever a real price (Finessa sales page). So we show only the current prices and let you judge from those.

What do you show instead of a was price?

Only the current price, the pack size, the cost per scoop by our arithmetic and the 180-day refund window. We show no countdown timers or stock warnings either.
